My Sauza Ancestry

Galicia, Spain
(Thanks to Francis Reyes)
We trace our Sauza roots from Galicia, Spain were our great ancestor Don Alfonso Ricardo Nicolas Sauza y Holguin (11 June 1721, Galicia, Spain - 12 November 1822, Intramuros, Ciudad de Manila, Las Yslas Filipinas) also known as Papa Fonso originally came from before joining in 1740s his fellow Spaniards for trade in New Spain, the former name of Mexico.
As narrated by our elder Sauza ancestors, Papa Fonso was a strict yet loving man, a devotee of St. James the Greater, a tapa and wine maker, a businessman, a painter and a navigator. His first arrival in the Philippine soil was in July 1739 together with incoming Governor-General Gaspar de la Torre y Ayala and company. He was assigned in Cavite shipyard as assistant navigator to the Galleon Santiago together with his childhood friend also a navigator Don Melchor Cristobal Mariño y Orosa also known as Papa Meling by his Mariño descendants. Many of our elder Sauzas verified and narrated Papa Fonso and Papa Meling were kin in their native La Cruna in Galicia.
Papa Meling who was also my direct maternal ancestor eventually married the cantora and embroider of San Nicolas of Taal the mestiza damsel Señora Marcela Del Carmen Macabulos y Maningkad also known as Mama Maring whose maternal great great grandfather Juan Maningkad, a religious fisherman caught the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1603 while fishing at Pansipit River. This found image of the Blessed Virgin Mary became the Our of Lady of Caysasay that is presently found and enthroned at her shrine in Taal, Batangas, The Philippines.
